Open Fungal Data for Healthy People and Planet

MycoBase: an open, central online resource for mycology.

Decades of fungal strain and species data from the Westerdijk Institute, brought together with international databases in one open knowledge base.

About the projectMeet our team

Draft classification, under review by MycoBase mycologists.

Interactive tree. Click a taxon to close or open its branch, double-click to zoom to it, and drag taxa to bend the tree. Hold Ctrl, or Command on a Mac, while scrolling to zoom; on a touch screen, pinch to zoom and swipe sideways to move. With the keyboard: arrow keys move between taxa, Enter closes or opens a branch, F zooms to it, plus and minus zoom, 0 resets the view. The same classification follows as a list.

What is MycoBase?

MycoBase will establish an open, centralised online hub for mycology, integrating the Westerdijk Institute’s extensive data on fungal strains and species, accumulated over decades of research.

The platform brings together morphology, physiology, mycotoxin production, ecology, antifungal susceptibility and DNA barcodes, from the institute and from international databases, into one comprehensive knowledge base.

Hosted by Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute (KNAW) · Funded by Open Science NL (NWO)

More about MycoBase

Why it matters

  • Accurate fungal identification

Morphology, physiology and DNA barcodes in one place support reliable identification of strains and species.

  • AI-ready, curated fungal data

Curated, well-annotated datasets that follow the FAIR principles and can be reused directly, also for machine learning.

  • Food safety and public health

Data on mycotoxin production and antifungal susceptibility for food-safety and clinical work.

  • Biodiversity and conservation

Ecological and taxonomic data to support biodiversity research and conservation biology.
